The France Canyon Fire started June 11th at approximately 3 p.m. MST on the Powell Ranger District on the Dixie National Forest. It is burning in rough terrain about 6.5 miles southeast of Hatch, Utah. 

Color Country Incident Management Team 1, a Type 3 Incident Management Team, managed the incident between June 11 and June 22.

The Great Basin Team 5 assumed command of the fire on June 22. 

The Color Country Incident Management Team Type 3, assumed command of the fire on July 4.

Command of the fire returned to the home unit on July 13 with local Type 4 Incident Management Team. 


Management objectives include 

  • Provide for incident responder and public safety.
  • Coordinate with cooperators and local stakeholders.
  • Reduce the threat to private property, structures and Bryce Canyon National Park.
  • Protect critical infrastructure (power corridor, travel corridors and Wilson Repeater).
  • Protect sensitive species habitat identified by the Resource Advisor.
  • Work with Resource Advisors to identify and prioritize fire suppression repair and implement plan 

Closures are in effect for the area.

The predominant fuel type is mixed conifer timber with litter, understory, and considerable dead and
down fuels. Some areas of grass or shrubs also exist. Shrub species are drought stressed.

Significant Events

Minimal interior torching. Mop up and patrol both interior and uncontained areas of the perimeter

Outlook

Planned Actions
Mop-up, patrol, and secure the line of entire fire perimeter. The suppression repair plan will continue to be reviewed and implemented.
Projected Incident Activity
The France Canyon Fire is now 100% contained, with remaining fire and smoke located in an area with difficult terrain. Some smoke impact may be visible from Bryce Canyon City, Bryce Canyon National Park, State Route 12 and Hwy 89. Heavy equipment and the majority of resources have been released from the fire and remaining personnel have transitioned into monitoring.
The France Canyon Fire Emergency Area, Road and Trail Closure 0407-25-10 has been rescinded. The King Creek campground is now open. The public should exercise caution when driving roads or trails in or near the fire perimeter as the are is subject to flooding, falling trees, and rolling rocks, especially during periods of rain.
