Incident Overview

Background: The Dragon Bravo Fire started early in the afternoon on Friday July 4th, 2025, by lightning on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park. Suppression resources responded immediately. Firefighters constructed containment lines taking advantage of favorable terrain where possible to stop the fire spread.

On Friday July 11th, 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire was affected by strong and unfavorable northwest winds associated with a passing weather front. Consequently, the Dragon Bravo Fire exhibited extreme fire behavior and jumped multiple containment features. In the following days fire behavior continued to be very active, driven by hot temperatures, low relative humidities, and continued strong winds. Facilities in the North Rim developed area were impacted during this time and damage assessments are ongoing.

On Monday July 14th, 2025, at 6:00 am Southwest Complex Incident Management Team 4 took command of the Dragon Bravo Fire. They managed the fire until 6:00 am on Monday July 28th, 2025, when Southwest Complex Incident Management Team 2 took command of the fire.

On Sunday August 10th, 2025, Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7 assumed command of the Dragon Bravo Fire and will continue to manage the fire under a full suppression strategy while also ensuring firefighter/first responder and public safety.

In the last few days, suppression resources have made significant progress constructing and reinforcing containment lines. More favorable weather conditions have resulted in lower fire intensity in many areas. Suppression repair in select areas of the fire is in progress and will increase in the coming days. Crews remain adaptable and are ready to respond to suppression needs.

Significant Events

Active
Short Crown Runs
Flanking
Long-range Spotting

The fire exhibited active fire behavior on August 10th which was associated with lateral spread below the rim east of Hindu Point and spread in the Grand Canyon adjacent to the Walhalla Plateau. Fire behavior is forecast to be active today due to NW winds gust up to 28 mph. The NW wind shift will challenge containment lines near Hindu Point and on the Walhalla Plateau. Spotting will be a primary fire behavior challenge to containment lines with 0.25-0.75 mile spotting distances possible along the south side of the fire. If fire escaped containment lines in either area flanking and head fire will be possible to the south. The fire established in the Grand Canyon below Walhalla Plateau will be fuels and terrain driven in brush and grass.

Outlook

Planned Actions
Branch I
Div A: Utilize direct/indirect tactics to stop southern fire progression on the Wahalla Plateau. Identify and implement point protection for the infrastructure at Roaring Springs pumphouse.
Div B: Maintain anchor point off HWY 67 and utilize direct/indirect hand line and dozer line construction from Hindu point toward Point Sublime.
Div C: Establish anchor point and utilize direct/indirect hand line and dozer line construction toward Hindu Point. Utilize firing operations as needed to secure constructed line.
Div D: Unstaffed
Div G: Continue construction of contingency lines from the 223 road east toward Kaibab Lodge.
Branch III
Div L/M: Continue to patrol and secure the fires edge and address any areas of remaining heat that could threaten containment.
Div R/T: Continue to secure the fire line from H-16 to Div M break. Utilize UAS to identify areas of remaining heat that pose a risk to the line.

Current Weather

Weather Concerns

Weather Concerns: A dry, warm, and breezy weather pattern remained over the fire today. West to northwest winds gusted 20-25 mph, with relative humidity of 10-15%.
