The Wapiti Fire was started by lightning late in the evening of July 24, 2024, approximately 2 miles southwest of Grandjean, ID on the Boise National Forest. Steep terrain, difficult access and unfavorable weather conditions have challenged firefighters. The Fire is burning on the Boise National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest, and Salmon-Challis National Forest in Boise and Custer Counties. The Boise National Forest managed the Wapiti Fire until the Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7 assumed command. Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5 began managing the Fire on August 10. Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 assumed command of the Fire on Saturday, August 24. Command of the fire transferred back to Great Basin Incident Management Team 7 Saturday, Sep. 7, 2024. Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 4 assumed command of the Fire on September 19. Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 3 assumed command on October 5, 2024. Sawtooth Type 3 Team assumed command October 8, 2024. Current Situation
Short grass, Brush and Timber
Predominant fuels burning are timber understory (TUS) and medium load, dry climate shrub (SH2), and timber litter (TLS). 1000 hour logs completely consumed. Extensive timber stands with beetle kill throughout the Stanley Basin.
Fire behavior was generally creeping with very low spread rates and flame lengths, occurring on portions of the uncontrolled edge and interior pockets. Occasional jackpot burning produced moderate behavior. Fire is moving slowly with occasional short runs as fire aligned with short timber stringers.
Outlook
Coordinate with READs and ARCHs on the implementation and completion of the suppression repair
plan.
Continue removal of large wood material from suppression efforts, to areas away from residences.
Areas under a confine strategy are currently unstaffed and are being monitored by air.
Monitor for debris slides and impact to roads and trails.
12 hours: Cooler temperatures and light winds will further slow fire activity.
24 hours: Same as above.
48 hours: Same as above.
72 hours: Colder temperatures and moistures is further expected to slow fire activity.
